BOEGOEBERG 4X4
BOEGOEBERG 4X4 TRAIL GUIDE & INFORMATION

Location
Boegoeberg 4×4 Trail is located on the farm Lambertshoek, in the ‘Engelsman se Berge’ overlooking Graafwater, Elands Bay, Lambertsbay and Clanwilliam, in the Western Cape.
Why Visit?
There are several self-drive routes and a dune playground if you want to let off steam. Thanks to a wide variety of terrain found here, all types of 4x4s are welcome, from soft-roaders and modified rock-crawlers.
There’s also a gigantic swimming pool for the hottest days and sheltered accommodation for the rainy season – including a cottage deep in the mountains for the ultimate secluded getaway.
Boegoeberg has achieved a top ten rating from Drive Out magazine as well as fantastic reviews from SA4x4 magazine.

When to Go
Boegoeberg is open all year round, but if you’re keen on doing the main 4×4 loop and there’s been heavy rain, call in advance to check whether the trail is open.
What to Expect
A 4×4 destination that not only tickles the adventurers’ fancy, but also has the potential to push driver and vehicle to their limits. Boegoeberg has been farmed for six generations and today produces buchu and tea. There’s also a variety of accommodation options available, making it the perfect place to bring the family for a weekend escape.

Terrain varies between sandy river beds and a dune section, to extremely steep, off-camber mountain trails covered in loose rocks. There is one 40⁰ descent on very loose rocks near the end of the trail. If you’re not an experienced and confident 4×4 driver, do not attempt the mountain route as there are no turn around points.
How to Navigate
After receiving your map (it depicts the area and details the route), choose which trail you want to tackle.
There’s an easy route for a pleasant scenic drive, a large dune with sand tracks to play on, as well as a new riverbed section, which is popular but weather dependant.
Boegoeberg’s defining route however, is the long ‘Donkey Wagon’ trail, which will take you at least four hours of non-stop driving to complete.

Sign boards guide you along the way, and if you follow those, you shouldn’t get lost despite many turn-offs used by the tractor to collect buchu and rooibos tea. For those with heavily-modified 4x4s, there’s an extreme challenge section at the top of the mountain – check with the owner to make sure it’s open.
To tackle the mountain section, mud terrain tyres (deflated to around 60% of road pressure) are recommended.
